How to Look Up Your NPN
Your National Producer Number (NPN) is your unique identifier across all states. It's how carriers, regulators, and platforms like SidecarLeads verify that you're actively licensed and in good standing.
Visit the NIPR Producer Database
Go to pdb.nipr.com and search by your name or NPN. This shows every active license you hold across all states.
Check your license status in each state
Each license entry will show status (Active / Expired / Terminated), expiration date, and lines of authority. Make sure Life is listed for every state you want to receive leads in.
Update your SidecarLeads profile
Log into your dashboard and add any newly licensed states under Settings. SidecarLeads uses your licensed states to route leads — unlisted states can't route to you even if you're legally licensed there.
States That Are Easy to Add
These states are known for straightforward reciprocity and fast processing for agents already licensed in another state:
Agents in GA often work well in FL, SC, TN, and NC. Agents in NJ frequently expand to PA, NY, CT, and DE. Geographic proximity means similar demographics and carrier availability — making it easier to serve clients consistently.
States That Require Extra Steps
A few states have additional requirements or don't participate fully in reciprocity agreements. Plan ahead if you're targeting:
- California — Requires a state-specific exam for non-residents in most cases. High-value market but more work to enter.
- Florida — Has its own application process with additional documentation requirements.
- New York — One of the most restrictive states. Requires a separate exam and has strict continuing education rules.
- Wyoming / Montana / Alaska — Smaller markets but straightforward reciprocity.
Keeping Your Licenses Active
A license doesn't do you any good if it lapses. Each state has its own continuing education (CE) requirements — typically 24 hours every 2 years, though this varies. Missing a renewal means your license goes inactive, leads stop routing to you in that state, and you may need to reapply.
Best practice: set a calendar reminder 90 days before each license renewal date. Use NIPR or your state's DOI website to check renewal dates for every state you're licensed in.
